Frequently Asked Questions
What is an i-name?
An individual i-name is your own identity on the web. One name identifies one person. Think of it as an address that will stay with you for as long as you want to keep it. Regardless of who you work for, which Internet Service Provider you use or where you live, your i-name will always be the same.
What is OpenID?
OpenID is an open, decentralised, free framework for user-centric digital identity.
What do I get for my money?
Your name is secured for a year and an i-number assigned to you for life. You also have free use of the i-services we provide.
Who is supporting this standard?
There are a number of i-brokers accredited by XDI.org and the central registry.
What if someone invents another identity standard? Will my i-name be useless?
Although i-names are excellent OpenID identifiers, the open OASIS XRI specifications on which i-names and i-numbers are based were created to provide interoperable digital identifiers for any Internet identity technology, including OASIS SAML, Microsoft CardSpace, the Liberty Alliance architecture, and the open source Higgins Project. So you are safe investing in an i-name identity no matter how Internet identity infrastructure evolves.
What if =you disappears or I want to move to another i-broker?
Should you ever be disatisfied with your i-services, your global i-name and i-number are guaranteed portable to any XDI.org-Accredited I-Broker, i.e., you are never locked in to just one service provider. (Note: community i-names and i-numbers may not be portable.)
I have a domain name... why do I need an i-name?
i-names are easy to remember and type and are much shorter than domain names. Global personal i-names (=names) cost no more than personal .com domain names, yet come with stronger security and privacy protection - for example, there is no public database of i-name registration data, so there is no need to pay extra to keep your registration data private. i-names also come with services tailored for personal use; not just for web hosting.
